Product History & Performance Attributes

Developed to give builders, owners, and developers a durable, sustainable, and thermally protective coating, DuroPro Cork Barrier leverages the natural benefits of cork for modern building envelopes.

Performance Attributes:

  • Thermal barrier properties

  • ASTM E84 Class A fire rating

  • Water- and insect-resistant

  • UV- and weather-resistant

  • Sound-absorptive and lightweight

  • Flexible and non-toxic

  • Water-based for easy cleanup

  • Adheres to most substrates (excluding vinyl)

Code Compliance

  • Approved for both interior and exterior use under 2021 / 2018 / 2015 IBC & IRC

  • Resistant to fungal growth per ASTM G21

  • Class A interior finish (flame spread ≤ 25 | smoke ≤ 450 per ASTM E84)

  • Approved for use in fire-resistance-rated wall assemblies (interior-facing orientation)

  • Application thickness: two passes at 60 mils (1.5 mm) each

  • Not intended for below-grade applications

Design Considerations

  • Non-structural finish coating — no structural design required

  • Serves as a finish layer within the wall assembly

  • Can be integrated into fire-rated or non-fire-rated wall systems

Installation and Application

  • General Guidelines:

  • Follow manufacturer instructions and building codes

  • Substrate must be clean, dry, and debris-free

  • Recommended temperature: Above 40 °F (4 °C)

  • Approved substrates: cementitious systems, stucco, plaster, concrete, CMU

  • Two-Coat Process:

  • First Pass – Coverage Coat (60 mils wet film)

  • Second Pass – Texture Coat (after 12–24 hrs drying depending on ambient conditions)

Fire-Resistance Rated Construction

  • May be applied to fire-resistance-rated walls from the interior-facing fire side without reducing rating

  • Approved Construction Types: IAB, IIAB, IIIB, IVAB, VAB1

  • Approved Uses: Exterior and Interior Finish

  • Limitations:

  • Fire separation > 10 ft (3048 mm)

  • Max height 40 ft (12.2 m) above grade

  • NFPA 268 testing not required

New Construction Applications

  • When used over new stucco substrates:

  • Convert to a “one-coat” stucco system

  • Finish to a smooth, paint-ready surface before applying DuroPro Cork Barrier
